Albert Humphrey - Biography and Contribution

.

Albert Humphrey was an American business and management consultant with a specialty in organizational management & cultural change. He was born on 2 June 1926, . After earning a B.Sc. in chemical engineering from the University of Illinois, Humphrey gained a Master’s degree in Chemical engineering from the M.I.T and an MBA from the Harvard University.

While Albert Humphrey was working at the Stanford Research Institute in the 1960s and 70s on a project around the Fortune 500, he produced a team method for planning (TAM – Team Action Model), which created the SOFT analysis, which was later developed into the famous SWOT analysis. SOFT analysis stood for –

S: Stood for what is satisfactory at present

O: denoting what opportunities could be explored in the future

F: means faults in the present

T: signified the threats that could surface in the future

During the Long Range Planning seminar, the F in SOFT analysis was replaced by W for weaknesses and the resultant SWOT analysis emerged. Today SWOT analysis is a structured planning method used to evaluate the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats involved in a project, strategy or business venture.

He also developed the concept of employee involvement in business planning. Albert Humphrey’s team came up with the Stakeholder concept which is today highly referenced by the business leaders, economists and politicians.

Albert Humphrey has served as a consultant to over 100 companies across the length and breadth of the globe.

He was also responsible for the ‘International Executive seminar in Business Planning’ for Stanford Research Institute and was the ‘European Operations Director’ for the National Bureau of Certified Consultants in USA.

He died  in 2005.
